About this event
Disability does not equate to vulnerability. The effects of emergencies disproportionately impact people living with disabilities. Join us on 1 December for our event in the lead up to International Day for People with Disability to hear from our guest about their insights from their life experiences about:
- barriers experienced when trying to access emergency information and community information sessions.
- good practice for effective engagement and partnership with people living with disability.
- good practice to improve access to emergency information and community events and engagements.
The panel discussion will be facilitated by Colleen Furlanetto OAM, AV Board Member, CFA Volunteer and VICSES Associate member and Former Commercial Passenger Vehicles Victoria Disability Commissioner.
Panelists include:
- Nazim Erdem, Practice Leader, AQA Victoria
- Shanleigh Meldrum, Section Leader: Events & Presentations, VICSES Gisborne Unit
- Jim Mullan, CEO, AMAZE
- Maurice Gleeson, President, Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria
As a sector, we can improve disability-inclusive practice and strength-based approaches to meet the needs of those who can be most vulnerable to the impacts of emergencies.
Register now, so you can find out how you, as an emergency management sector member (e.g involved in response/recovery, community engagement, communications and public information) can assist in reducing the impacts of emergencies on people living with disability. Because every interaction and communication matters, especially when enabling people to prepare for, respond to and recover from an emergency.
For accessibility, Auslan interpreters will be arranged, and we will be hosting the event based on the Disability Advocacy Resource Units guide for inclusive online meetings. Other reasonable accommodations can be arranged by contacting carlie.newman@emv.vic.gov.au or 03 9136 2214.
